In compliance with the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and Georgia HB244, students in grades three through eight will be assessed with End of Grade (EOG) assessments in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. These End of Grade assessments are part of the new Georgia Milestone Assessment System, which serves as a component of the state’s accountability system, College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI).
The purpose of these assessments is to measure how well students have mastered the state-adopted content standards. The majority of each assessment will still include selected response items (multiple choice); however, constructed response and extended response questions will be added to the English Language Arts and Mathematics sections.
The Georgia Department of Education will not provide 2014-15 EOG results until fall 2015. Therefore, results from the End of Grade assessments will not factor into promotion or retention decisions.
Cobb County teachers have been working all year to ensure that students are prepared to take these new assessments. Preparations have included teaching students to answer more complex questions and to provide supporting evidence.
